Current retail and commercial guides commonly divide outdoor tables into dining, counter and bar categories. Those ranges can orient a search, but the project should not convert them into an approval rule. The actual top may differ; a thick apron can reduce usable leg space; a cushion changes the finished seat reference; arms may stop a chair before it reaches its intended position.
For every table or stool, state where each value is measured from and to. “1050 mm high” is incomplete if the drawing does not say whether that is the finished top, structural frame or another reference. Record units once, avoid mixing rounded inches with millimetres, and identify the finished floor or ground datum. If the substrate slopes, steps or uses adjustable feet, show which state the measurement represents.

Build an item-family dimension register
Start before the shop-drawing set becomes fragmented. Give each outdoor furniture family one controlled row and link it to the latest design intent, supplier drawing, room or area schedule, finish reference and sample status. A useful register separates reported values from decisions:

Do not overwrite an earlier value silently. Keep the superseded revision and record why the value changed. A five-millimetre drawing correction and a five-millimetre measured difference are not the same event; one changes the instruction, while the other may expose a sample or production variance.

Coordinate paired furniture as one interface
A table and stool should be reviewed as a pair even when they come from different packages. Calculate the clear relationship using the finished references that affect use—not only the nominal overall heights. For a raised table, compare the seat reference with the underside of the top or apron, then review arms, footrests, base positions and the movement needed to enter and leave.
The same logic applies to lounge seating and occasional tables. Compare the finished cushion state with the tabletop, note whether a deep overhang or central base changes approach, and test the actual furniture or representative sample. The design team should define the desired relationship and acceptance method for the project; this article does not set a universal comfort dimension.

Separate footprint from the operating envelope
A plan block often shows furniture in a tidy guest-ready position. It may omit the chair pulled back, a seated guest, a server approaching, a movable umbrella, a door opening or furniture grouped for cleaning. Record at least the states the operator will actually use, and identify which state controls each coordination review.
Use the item-level envelope as an input to the area plan, not as a replacement for it. The outdoor layout process decides where zones and furniture groups belong. The dimension register tells that process how large one item or paired setting becomes in its defined states. Keep routes, water edges, fire strategy, egress, supervision, accessibility and local code decisions with the responsible qualified parties.
For movable furniture, distinguish normal adjustment from an uncontrolled position. If an operator is expected to reset a stool or lounger, show the reset reference and identify how it will be communicated. If an item stacks, folds or nests, record that envelope separately and confirm the storage route as its own operational check.

Work one mismatch from drawing to decision
Consider a hypothetical outdoor bar-table pair. The design schedule lists the finished tabletop at 1050 mm above finished floor. The supplier drawing lists 1035 mm. Its underside is 995 mm, and the stool drawing lists a finished seat reference at 760 mm. The calculated seat-to-underside difference is therefore 235 mm:
995 mm underside − 760 mm seat reference = 235 mm recorded interface.
Assume the project’s own approved interface sheet requires a different range. The correct status is HOLD—not “close enough.” Log the 15 mm conflict between the design schedule and supplier top height, the calculated interface, the cushion state used, and the responsible owner. Options might include revising the table, revising the stool or changing the pair, but the project team must assess every affected datum and approve the chosen route.
This example demonstrates arithmetic and traceability only. None of its values is a Gainwell default, ergonomic recommendation, manufacturing tolerance, code rule or approval criterion.
Verify the sample against the controlled drawing
Measure the representative sample with the same datum definitions used in the drawing. Record the instrument or method, measurement points, surface condition, adjustable-foot state, cushion state, date and reviewer. Photograph the measurement when it helps another reviewer reproduce the check, but do not treat a perspective photograph as dimensional proof.
Create a difference log rather than writing isolated comments on images. For each field, show drawing value, measured value, delta, allowed project criterion if one exists, disposition, owner and link to the decision. If the drawing changes, issue a new revision. If the sample changes, identify the new sample state. Production should not be released while the record points to conflicting references.
Where a project specifies performance testing, name the exact standard, edition, product scope and evidence required. BIFMA describes ANSI/BIFMA X5.5-2021 as covering commercial desk and table products including restaurant and cafeteria contexts. That scope does not make the standard automatic for every outdoor project, prove compliance or replace destination-specific review.
Keep accessibility as a separate controlled requirement
Bar-height settings do not remove the need to coordinate accessible dining where it applies. In ADA-covered US facilities, section 226 of the 2010 ADA Standards contains dining-surface scoping, while section 902 contains technical requirements for height, clear floor space, and knee and toe clearance. Other countries and project types have different authorities and rules.

Trace one item family through four stages: datum card, paired-item test, envelope check and release decision. Confirm that every stage points to the same current item and revision.
